Abstract
As is well known, the tomographic technique has been employed in the industry as well as in the medical diagnostic imaging. Meanwhile, synchrotron radiation (SR) facilities have been identified as ideal X-ray sources for the tomography. X-ray microtomography (XMT) performed using SR facilities has enabled the reconstruction of volumes with a maximum spatial resolution of about 0.05 to 1 micrometer. Thanks to recent advances in the SR XMT, attractive researches have been conducted within the hard X-ray region, demonstrating 3-D images of internal microstructure and other features mainly in light materials but including steel and copper. Especially, 4-D (i.e. 3-D + time) imaging has been demonstrated as a robust tool for the materials science, realizing the in-situ 3-D observations of damage/fracture/fatigue behaviors and the visualization of microstructural changes during materials processes as typical examples. We also have some attempts to utilize 3-D images-based numerical simulation. The XMT technique also has a unique possibility to extract 3D/4D internal information, such as strain, displacement, crack driving forces as a form of 3-D high-density mapping. It has been mainly realized by tracking internal microstructural features under external disturbance. The techniques are clearly advantageous compared to surface or cross-sectional measurements reported in the current literature. Overall, high-resolution SR XMT offers a highly effective way of assessing various long-unrecognized phenomena in the materials science and engineering.
