ABSTRACT

This talk will cover several aspects of the electrochemical characterization of materials for supercapacitor applications [1]. We will start with the experimental study of the ion confinement effect in microporous carbons. By using Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Micro-balance (EQCM) coupled with in-situ NMR, we will show how the ions and the solvent molecules organize themselves in the carbon pores during the charge and the discharge of EDLCs [2]. These results provide a direct molecular-level insight into the charge storage process in microporous carbon electrodes, and show that the charging mechanisms differ depending on the polarization of the electrode surface.
The design of high voltage electrolyte is also a key feature for assembling high energy density supercapacitors. The combination of a eutectic mixture of ionic liquids and a high surface area graphene allowed reaching a large temperature window (from -30°C to 80 °C) together with a large potential window of 3.5 V at room temperature and below [3]. Finally, we will show results dealing with the preparation of dense, thin films of microporous Carbon-Derived Carbide from the chlorination of TiC thin films for the preparation of micro-supercapacitor directly integrated onto Si wafers [4]. The control of the synthesis parameters offers as well the possibility of preparing freestanding microporous carbon films for flexible power electronics applications.
