Topic: Engineered pore-configuration in cellular ceramics

Abstract:

Various pore configurations have been widely found in nature, because structures of animals and plants can permit efficiency in mechanical properties - porosities. Fabricated porous ceramics have great advantages with high temperature stability and corrosion resistance. When the numerous engineering applications are considered, high porosity should be desired, in terms of insulation, filtration, fluid permeability, absorption, reaction and weight. Although there is still big issue to achieve the optimized balance between porosity and properties, tailored and engineered pore configurations can have some possibilities to overcome the problem. In this presentation, we will review our recent progress on advanced processing strategies to control pore configurations at different length and volume scales, and discuss three main technological features: (i) relationship between carefully selected processing conditions and unidirectional cellular morphologies, (ii) substantially improved mechanical properties by providing a relatively denser layer on surfaces of cellular ceramics, (iii) the engineering applications such as fluid permeability, mechanical properties, machinability, electrochemical performance, piezoelectric properties and thermal insulation, in terms of pore configurations. These simple and versatile approaches can tailor porous architectures with engineered porosity, and yield cellular monoliths with various distinct characteristics.
