Abstract

The talk presents a state-of-the-art introduction to size effects in engineering mechanics,material sciences,and manufacturing from the fundamental science to the practical applications. It provides a detailed evaluation of size effects in mechanics, material sciences and manufacturing, and their effects on related physical behaviors and phenomena from a practical perspective. The first part addresses the physical aspects of size effects, including tension, compression, and bending deformation in mechanics, fatigue and damage behaviors, the mechanisms behind these effects, and modelling the behavior and phenomena of size effects. The second part deals with the practical applications of size effects in material sciences and meso-/micro-manufacturing, and how size effects influence the process performance,process outcome,properties,and quality of fabricated parts and components. Finally,the future of size effects research is discussed,considering how to improve stability and performance and reduce uncertainties. In detail,it covers
