Abstract:
Iron is ubiquitous and remains the backbone of society. This talk will go through the history of iron and steel and show how the sheer volume of this “miracle” material makes it so precious. Examples of very early uses of castings and forgings will be presented followed by some of the most recent research initiatives to understand microstructure at the micro and nanoscale using high resolution microscopy to design still better alloys and processes. Future research opportunities will be highlighted.
Brief biography of the speaker:
Anil K. Sachdev retired from General Motors Global Research and Development after serving there as Principal Technical Fellow and Lab Group Manager at GM. Dr. Sachdev is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of The Metallurgical Society. He started his career in 1977 after receiving his doctorate in Materials Science and Engineering from MIT. His research interests included microstructure design of aluminum and magnesium alloys, metal matrix-composites, and high strength steels for structural applications. The various projects he led were focused on improving performance of materials and designs to reduce component mass for improved energy efficiency. Most recently he led materials developments related to Additive Manufacturing and lithium metal for battery anodes. He has presented several keynotes at international conferences and has been a Key Reader for Metallurgical and Materials Transactions for the past 40 years. He has 120 patents and 100+ external publications related to light metal developments and has received best paper awards and product recognition awards from AFS, TMS, NADCA, IMA for his work. Sachdev is Adjunct Professor at the University of Michigan and Distinguished Research Professor at the University of North Texas.
